I wrote this song after visiting the Aggie Bonfire Memorial. On the door of one of those who died in the bonfire accident was a Native American burial poem. It inspired me to write this.
I Do Not Sleep
chorus:
Do not stand on my grave and weep
For I am not there, I do not sleep
I am the thousand winds that blow, the gleam of diamond on the snow
I'm the sun on the grain and the gentle autumn rain
when you wake amidst the hush, I'm the swift uplifting rush
of birds in the flight; I'm the stars in the night
Do not stand on my grave and weep
for I am not there, I do not sleep
v1
My soul is just life that is kept in its shell
like the seed of a rose ready to bloom
When the time must come, I will be among the clouds
I'll be the beams of the sun and the moon
Don't you dare think that I died 'cause my body's grown old
that's what they do
chorus
v2
When the winds began to whisper and rain starts to patter
it's just me kissing you
The stars in the sky began to sparkle in the night
that's just me around you
as long as you keep me warm in your heart
I can never die
I am the dawn breaking over the hill
and the breeze of the autumn
never to die
chorus
bridge:
You sit there with your face in your hands
and your eyes are wet
You feel so cold, so alone, wishing I was here
oh, but you forget
I am not absent, I am not missing
you just can't see me, touch me, hear me
I am just free
Don't you dare think that I died 'cause my body's grown old
That's what they do
chorus
Do not stand on my grave and weep
for I am not there; I do not sleep
